Position:        Bilingual/ESL Secondary Teacher

 

Supervisor:    Principal

 

General Job Description:  The Bilingual/ESL Secondary Teacher will provide guidance and instructional experiences that are academically and developmentally appropriate for each student assigned to that classroom.   The teacher will be responsible for the New Mexico Teacher Competencies and Indicators based on the level of licensure.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  Communicate accurately and effectively in the content area and maintain a professional rapport with students.  Instruction should be in home language (Navajo or Spanish) for bilingual classes and in English for ESL (English as a Second Language) classes.

  2. Utilize a variety of teaching methods and resources for each area taught.
  3. Utilize student assessment techniques and procedures.
  4. Obtain feedback from and communicate with students in a manner that enhances student learning and understanding.
  5. Comprehends the principles of student growth, development and learning, and applies them appropriately.
  6. Manage the classroom t o ensure the best use of instructional time and promote positive student behavior in a safe and healthy environment.
  7. Recognizes student diversity and creates an atmosphere conducive to the promotion of student involvement and self-concept.
  8. Demonstrate a willingness to examine and implement change, as appropriate.
  9. Work productively with colleagues, parents, and community members.
  10. Follow board policies and administrative rules and regulations.

 

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Communicate accurate and up-to-date information to students in a                                                                      way that enhances student learning.  Information will be conveyed in either the home languages (Spanish and Navajo) or in Standard English, depending upon the program being followed
  • Follow Bilingual Education/Title III guidelines and regulations
  • Be responsible for the home language and English language testing
  • Cooperate with administration, parents, and co-workers
  • Create a positive atmosphere and arrange the physical environment of the classroom for optimum learning
  • Prepare for instruction and show written evidence of preparation (lesson plans)
  • Take precautions to protect equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Keep an accurate and up-to-date inventory of classroom materials
  • Participate in school teams/committees
  • Support district initiatives
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by the school district and the Bilingual Education/Title III programs. (i.e. Bilingual folders, test results, Special Education forms for bilingual students, placement forms, and reclassification forms, etc.)
  • Attend bilingual/ESL meetings and trainings, as well as parent meetings.
  • Complete duties (hall, bus, etc.) as assigned
  • Leave adequate preparations for a substitute, if needed.  (Lesson plans, daily schedule, etc.)
  • Develop and implement appropriate classroom management strategies and encourage cooperation between students.
  • Demonstrate public relations skills.  (i.e. PED Ethics Code and support for the program)
  • Act as a good role model within the context of the school
  • Follow the department curriculum guides and Scope and Sequence guides
  • Use current technology for instruction and management purposes.  (i.e. lesson plans, PowerSchool)
  • Use diagnostic data to improve instructional programs. (NMELPT, NMELPA, home language test results, state and district formative & summative assessments)
  • Be available to parents, students, administration, and colleagues outside of the school day, as needed
  • Report suspected child abuse and neglect
  • Be responsible for students on field trips
  • May act as supervisor educational assistants and practicum students and teachers.
  • Develop and use community and professional resources
  • Participate in school PLCs, SAT meetings, Leadership and Goal teams
  • Follow district and school procedures
  • Accept other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the supervisor

 

Qualifications:

            Bilingual Education --

  • Secondary Teaching License
  • Bilingual endorsement and MCNL endorsement or
  • Native American Language and Culture License  (Native American languages only)

      ESL –

  • Secondary Teaching License
  • ESL Endorsement and Language Arts Endorsement
  • If K-8 teacher is teaching at middle school, then a Language Arts endorsement or highly qualified status is required as well

      Content Area --

  • Secondary Teaching License
  • Bilingual endorsement
  • Endorsement in content area
  • If K-8 teacher is teaching at middle school, then a Language Arts endorsement or highly qualified status is required as well

 

Physical Requirements: Ability to perform the job and access the environment for which you are hired.  The following may be required: Sitting, standing, lifting, moving about the room or school, carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, kneeling, prolonged typing, physical ability to type on a keyboard terminal, and moving light furniture.

 

Equipment/Technology Handled:   Must know how to properly operate or be willing to learn to operate all multimedia equipment including current technology.

 

Work environment:    Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality.  Interruptions of work are routine.  Flexibility and patience are required.  Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision.  After hour work may be required.  May make site or home visits when needed and appropriate.

 

Terms of Employment:   Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
