Position:                    Interpreter for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

 

Supervisor:                Director of Exceptional Programs and Coordinator of Special Services

                       

 

General Job Description: To provide interpretation for hearing impaired and deaf students as a bridge for them to be understood by and to communicate with other teachers and students. To provide tutoring and assist students with the acquisition of sign language skills when necessary.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work cooperatively with colleagues, supervisors and administrators

  • Follow district policies and administrative rules and regulations
  • Demonstrate professional demeanor at all times
  • Complete assigned duties successfully and in a timely manner
  • Assist in the delivery of related services as recommended by student plans
  • Assist with assessment, screening, therapy services and documentation
  • Obtain and maintain appropriate licensure
  • Fulfill district requirements for length of day, school calendar and other work related schedules as may be identified
  • Accept other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the supervisors

 

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Understand the nature of deafness and its implications
  • Interpret for HI students
  • Positions self in classrooms near teacher to enhance visibility by student during lectures and instruction
  • Positions self in classrooms appropriately to enhance interpretation during films or discussions
  • Interprets for the HI student and provides concept reinforcement when need
  • Provides feedback to the teacher

 

 

Qualifications:  High School Diploma or GED, Completion of a planned program through an accredited institution, Passage of the required licensure examinations. Licensure as determined by professional licensing boards and the New Mexico State Department of Education. 

 

Physical Requirements: Ability to perform the job and access the environment for which you are hired.  The following may be required: Sitting, standing, lifting, moving about the room or school, carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, kneeling, prolonged typing, physical ability to type on a keyboard terminal, and moving light furniture.  Ability to lift and position children.

 

Equipment/Technology Handled: Must know how to properly operate or be willing to learn to operate all multimedia equipment including current technology. 

 

Work Environment: Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality.  Interruptions of work are routine.  Flexibility and patience are required.  Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision.  After hour work may be required.

 

Terms of Employment: Salary and work calendar established yearly by the district.
