Position:         Assistant Director / Special Education Coordinator

 

Supervisor:    NMVA Director

 

General Job Description: The Assistant Director / Special Education Coordinator shall perform such duties as delegated by the director of the NMVA.  He/She shall be responsible for:

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:    

  • Facilitates the development, implementation and communication of a shared vision of learning that reflects excellence and equity for all students throughout the school system.
  • Promotes the development of organizational, instruction, and/or assessment strategies to enhance teaching and learning for exceptional needs students
  • Works with others to ensure a working and learning climate throughout the system that is safe, secure, and respectful of diversity.
  • Fosters a culture of continuous improvement focused upon teaching and learning.
  • Uses excellent management and leadership skills to achieve effective and efficient organizational operations.

 

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Develops, supports, encourages and supervises programs that lead to increased student attendance and achievement.
  • Administer the school in the Director’s absences
  • Represent the Director at various events or meetings as needed
  • Share responsibility for supervision of school activities
  • Assist with the supervision and evaluation of staff as assigned
  • Comply with timelines and requests for information from district/state administration
  • Attend schoolwide and staff collaborative meetings as assigned
  • Meet with committees (SAT, IEP, 504, PAC, PLC and Leadership) in a consistent and timely manner as assigned by the Director
  • Be available to parents, students, administration and staff outside the school day, if needed
  • Administer the attendance accounting system as directed by the Director
  • Report suspected child abuse or neglect
  • Act as a good role model within the context of the school
  • Develop and use community and professional resources
  • Understand and apply learning theories
  • Accept other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the supervisor

 

Qualifications:  Master’s degree in education, valid NM administrative license as required by the State of New Mexico, At least 5 combined years of experience in Special Education, school administration and supervision and/or teaching. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Director may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Physical Requirements: Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, kneeling, prolonged typing, physical ability to type ob a keyboard terminal, and moving light furniture may be required.

 

Equipment/Technology Handled: Must know basic computer programs such as MS Office products, Skype, and know or be willing to learn Blackboard, virtual filing systems, and other programs used by NMVA in relation to being an online school. 

 

Work Environment: Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality.  Interruptions of work are routine.  Flexibility and patience are required.  Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision.  After hour work may be required.

 

Terms of Employment: Salary and work calendar established yearly by the Director in collaboration with the NMVA Governing Council.
