Position:        Johnson O’Malley (JOM) Facilitator – Native American Youth Advisor

 

Supervisor:    School Site Principal and/or JOM Coordinator

 

General Job Description:  To facilitate intervention and seamless transition of eligible Native American secondary (middle and high) students, to provide support/mentorship to Native American secondary students, and to implement the terms of the JOM grant.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Communicate accurately, effectively, and maintain a professional rapport with Native America secondary students and parents
  2. Utilize a variety of culturally-responsive intervention methods and resources
  3. Utilize student mentoring and support techniques and procedures
  4. Obtain feedback from and communicate with Native American students in a manner that enhances student learning, understanding and self motivation
  5. Comprehends the principles of student growth, development and learning, and applies them appropriately
  6. Manage resources to ensure the best use and promote positive student behavior in a safe and healthy environment
  7. Recognizes student diversity and creates an atmosphere conducive to the promotion of student involvement and self-concept
  8. Demonstrate a willingness to examine and implement change, as appropriate.
  9. Work productively with colleagues, administrators, parents, and community members
  10. Follow board policies and administrative rules and regulations

 

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide culturally-responsive mentoring to eligible middle and high school Indian students in one-on-one setting or student cultural workshops
  • Plan and coordinate student cultural workshops at the middle and high schools assigned
  • Use student related data to identify areas of needs and obtain content resources for Intervention and Transition strategies (attendance reports, grades, etc.)
  • Work with JOM Coordinator to plan and implement the terms of the JOM grant
  • Develops online student and parent surveys, collects and compiles responses (qualitative data), and analyzes data and student progress/trend
  • Provide support and mentoring to Native American students for financial assistance from various sources (tribal, federal, state and organizations)
  • Work with the schools to monitor potential Native American students for the Chief Manuelito Navajo Tribal and GATES Scholarships
  • Work with community and tribal resources to support Native American students with focus groups, presentations, and cultural enrichment
  • Work with school staff and Native American students to foster Native American culture at schools (i.e. student clubs, parent and community events, etc.)
  • Work with the Office of Indian Education (OIE) to provide information and support to school administrators, school staff, and the community
  • Assist with the JOM application (component relevant to position)
  • Stay abreast of current federal and Navajo Nation compliance criteria
  • Work with OIE to collect certificates of Indian blood (CIBs) from students and parents, and provide OIE with information on students who have moved, dropped, or withdrawn at the end of every semester
  • Attend monthly Indian Education Committee (IEC) meetings to share best practices, training, and programmatic information
  • Attend and participate in Parent Cultural workshops at middle and high schools
  • Fulfill responsibilities of the Johnson O’Malley grant (component relevant to position)
  • Accept other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the supervisor
  • Confidentiality is essential

 

Qualifications:  A BA or MA degree, valid New Mexico teaching license with endorsements preferred. Basic knowledge of the federal and tribal Johnson O’Malley.   Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Physical Requirements: Ability to perform the job and access the environment for which you are hired.  The following may be required: Sitting, standing, lifting, moving about the room or school, carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, kneeling, prolonged typing, physical ability to type on a keyboard terminal, and moving light furniture.

 

Equipment/Technology Handled: Must know how to properly operate or be willing to learn to operate all multimedia equipment including current technology. 

 

Work Environment: Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality.  Interruptions of work are routine.  Flexibility and patience are required.  Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision.  After hour work may be required.

 

Terms of Employment: Salary and work calendar established yearly by the district.
