Position:             School Bus Driver, Classified

 

Supervisor:            Supervisor &/or Assistant Supervisor, Transportation

 

General Job Description: Safe and efficient operation of a school bus, transporting students to and from school as well as related activities in accordance with all local district, state, and federal regulations.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct a thorough pre/post-trip inspection of school bus and special equipment
  • Possess comprehensive knowledge of driving safely
  • Know the district, state, and federal rules, regulations, procedures and law as they relate to the operation of a school bus
  • Have ability to maintain effective pupil behavior management control over large groups of children
  • Able to read and interpret schedules and forms as well as read and identify areas on the map
  • Keep an updated route sheet and map as well as student registration forms and current seating assignment as required by state and local districts
  • Able to drive district buses and to operate lift equipment and securement devices on special needs equipment
  • Attend in-service training classes and mandatory meetings as required by district, state, and federal government
  • Instruct students on emergency evacuation drills as required by district, state, and federal regulations
  • Able to meet emergency situations in accordance with operating procedures
  • Have a positive attitude and communicate with students, parents, teachers, co-workers and supervisors
  • Keep bus clean.  Complete necessary maintenance reports
  • Report all accidents and complete required reports
  • Maintain good work habits and keep a presentable appearance, which includes proper dressing apparels and good hygiene
  • Flexibility and patience are required. Drivers must be able to complete job assignments on time without direct supervision.  Must be able to perform all other duties assigned to them
  • Accept other responsibilities and duties as deemed necessary by supervisor

 

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

When transporting students with disabilities:

  • Assist and supervise the use of lift equipment to transfer students in wheelchairs.
  • Assist and supervise ambulatory students entering and exiting the bus.
  • Assist and supervise the securing of wheelchairs on the bus.
  • Check secure devices (harnesses, seat belts, infant restraints) for defects.
  • Be knowledge is required to care for challenged students with diverse and special transportation needs.

When transporting students, school activities and field trips:

  • Must have proper forms and trip ticket.
  • Must have a roster and itinerary for overnight trips.  Keep track of standby time and driving time while on duty.
  • Need to know your destination on activity trips and field trips.
  • Include all necessary telephone numbers and emergency contacts.
  • Adhere to all district and state policies regarding extra curricular activities.
  • Make sure all athletic equipment & luggage is properly secured.
  • Upon return make sure the bus is clean.
  • Turn in all trip tickets at the completion of the trip.

 

Qualifications:

  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid Class B New Mexico Commercial Driver License with “P” and “S” endorsement.
  • Must pass a Department of Transportation physical examination by a licensed physician.
  • Must pass a substance abuse test as prescribed by local school board policy and state statutes.
  • Must have a satisfactory driving record and criminal background that reflects a professional driver and meets all district, state, and federal requirements.

 

Physical Requirements: Ability to perform the job and access the environment for which you are hired.  The following may be required: Sitting, standing, lifting, moving about the room or school, carrying (up to 60 pounds), reaching, squatting, and kneeling. Must be physically able to enter and exit out of a school bus, to check engine compartment, push doors and wheelchairs.  Must be in good physical condition in order to inspect around and down the aisle of the bus and check lugs, tires and underneath the bus.  

 

Equipment/Technology Handled: Gasoline and Diesel Fuels, Lubricants, Washing Equipment and be willing to learn to operate all multimedia equipment including current technology. 

 

Work Environment: Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality.  Interruptions of work are routine.  Flexibility and patience are required.  Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision.  After hour work may be required.

 

Terms of Employment: Salary and work calendar established yearly by the district.
